Be Still

“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭46:10‬
'Be still' – 'cease working', 'stop striving', 'relax', 'be calm'.
So often, life's craziness hits, and we feel that urge to do our headless chicken impersonation. Our survival instinct kicks in and we're either immobilised by panic or we go into fix-it mode, where we strive and drive ourselves to distraction trying sort the problem out ourselves.
I love the way psalm 46 starts off – "God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! Interlude”
‭‭The Psalmist is saying, 'Life happens! The worst may happen – we might be hit by an earthquake and the very mountains might crumble to nothing and collapse into the sea. But let them! Let the 'worst' happen because we, God's people have something so precious, so indestructible inside us, that when we look to Him in our time of trouble, we can 'be still' and trust Him. Why? Because He is The Lord our God.
Here's what the Psalm says – after the mountains may crumble and fall into the sea – here's that precious gift inside us:
“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.” Psalms 46:4,5

We can know a calm confidence in our God.
We don't need to devise and strategise to fix our problems. They may be very big, but our God is bigger! We only need to rest in Him. Be still. Know – remember – that He.Is.God.
